Multimedia Systems
Advances in hardware technologies is finally allowing widespread multimedia availability. It is becoming increasingly easy to capture videos in high definition, distribute them to friends using broadband networks and carry them with you in portable ipod, PSP and other devices. This course will introduce all aspects of multimedia computing, communication, storage, and applications. We will study about current media types for images, video and audio and how they are used to create multimedia content, compress and distribute them via networked system to variety of end clients. We will study the algorithms, protocols architectures related to compression, watermarking, encryption and distribution. We will discuss established standards for multimedia such as the ISO standards - JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, MPEG7 as well as the ITU standards H.261, H.263, H.264 and G.711, G.722 etc, and HDTV standards. In addition, we will examine how to support multimedia applications with appropriate operating system, file system, and architectural features. The course will involve significant programming assignments.
